Week 10 Extra Credit Storytelling: The Three Fishes

Image
The Three Fishes: Three Fish Swimming in the Sea,  Wikipedia This is the tragic story of Very-Thoughtful, Thoughtful, and Thoughtless, three fish living in a river in a remote corner of the world. The names and dates have been changed out of respect for the dead. One day, three sibling fish were swimming and thriving in a remote part of the river that they had called home for the past two fish decades (which is actually 7 months in human years). Very-Thoughtful, the leader of the trio, suggested that they swim down river to see if the algae was greener farther down river, for he had heard tales told by the great birds of the river that down river was very prosperous. So, they packed up all of their belongings and began the journey down river. This journey took a full fish year (20 minutes) to complete, but they made it safe and sound. Shortly after settling in, they realized that this area was actually very dangerous. Not only were there many predatory birds in the ar...

Week 10 Storytelling: The Monkey and the Crocodile

Image
The Monkey and the Crocodile The Crocodile and the Monkey In the forests of India, there was a long and winding river that was the home of many crocodiles. On the banks of this river were several great trees, and in these trees lived dozens and dozens of monkeys. On the opposite side of the river from the monkeys there were many exotic fruit trees, and the greedy monkeys gathered together to try and figure out a way to get across the river so that they could get this foreign fruit. One of the hatched a brilliant scheme. "I'll trick one of those crocodiles to the rivers edge," he said, "and I will convince him to give me a ride across the river on his back, and then we will get the fruit!" This seemed like a good plan to the other monkeys, so they began to try and coax a crocodile to the rivers edge. The monkeys knew that crocodiles often had a taste for monkey, so they thought they came up with the perfect plan to trick the crocodiles to the ...

Week 7 Story: King Yudhisthira's Horse

Image
Horse O' War: King Yudhisthira's Horse leading Arjuna into Battle The story that I am about to tell you is one that has yet to be told in its original context. By now you are well aware of the story of the moon-white horse with a plate of gold strapped to its head. You know, the one that the army of Arjuna followed for a year, conquering rajah after rajah? Well, there are several very important aspects of that story that all but a very few are unaware of.  For starters, it may seem that the horse had very little to do with the many victories that Arjuna experienced, for I am just a simple horse, wandering around the land. That is where you are wrong.  But, it is not your fault as the reader, it is more my fault for keeping such a low profile in this story for so many centuries. Who am I, you might be asking? Well, let me tell you. I am Skanda, the firstborn son of Shiva, and the god of war, and during these particular events told in The Mahabharata I was str...

Sita and the Golden Deer Rama stalks the demon Maricha, who has assumed the form of a golden deer 1597-1605 Fazl, Northern Indian Gift of Charles Lang Freer As Sita wandered through the forest, picking wild flowers, she heard what sounded like soft hooves on the grass from a distance. She slowly began to approach the sound when she found herself in a clearing, gazing at one of the most beautiful creatures she had ever seen. The creature was a golden deer with silver spots, and its horns were tipped with magnificent sapphires and its eyes were a beautiful blue color; blue like lotus blooms. Upon hearing Sita approaching, the deer looked up and made to dart off, but it stopped and stared at Sita. Sita and the golden deer locked eyes, and Sita felt as if she was slowly drifting through the sky, mesmerized by the hypnotic gaze of the deer. Unaware that the deer was really Maricha in disguise, Sita desired nothing but to touch its beautiful golden skin. She called to Rama, ...

Week 2 Story

Re-telling of The Foolish, Timid Rabbit... Not really sure why rabbits are considered dumb in this picture, but it was funny Running From the Truth Like a Dumb Rabbit , May 2, 2015 One day, as the sun was setting, an ambitious young rabbit was sitting beneath a tree. This ambitious rabbit was envious of the wise old lion and his influence over the other animals and was trying to figure out a way to sway the other animals to follow him. But he had nothing of value to say. He was just a blowhard with nothing of importance to say, so it seemed impossible to ever take center stage. Then he thought, “I may have nothing of importance to say, but all I have to do is say SOMETHING, almost anything, and as long as I say it loud and confidently enough, some creatures will inevitably follow me. And then other creatures will follow them, and so on and so on.” So, suddenly, the young rabbit jumped up and yelled, “The end times are here! The world is ending!” And he ran as quickl...
